Steve sat in the cloth-covered chair. The conference table had such a high shine that it reflected the platinum records that lined every available inch on the wall. A cup of coffee that he hadn’t touched sat in a gold-rimmed cup and saucer. Directly to his left, at the head of the table, sat Marcus Ortiz, president of Gannon Records.

He was a thin and unassuming man. Steve had expected the president of one of the world’s most successful record labels to fill the room with a commanding presence. Instead, Marcus very calmly and quietly spoke while people tripped over themselves to do his bidding. He wore a gray suit with a pink shirt unbuttoned at the neck. To finish his look, he wore a ring with the logo of Gannon Records made out of diamonds on his pinkie.

Across from him, Paulette Byrd, Gannon’s attorney, scribbled on a yellow legal pad. She had skin the color of milk chocolate and wore her hair in a tight twist on the back of her head. She wore a mustard yellow business suit with a thick gold necklace.

“The fact is, Steven, you were what made Abaddon great. You. Your drive. Your talent. A solo act would be perfect. Or, if you’re more comfortable in the group setting, we can get some backup band members with presence and name it Slay or Slain or something more identifiable to you.” Marcus spun his chair so that he faced Steve. “We’d go with a more pop sound, drop the whole acid rock vibe. The real money is in pop these days. You cleaned up your act. A crossover to a more popular sound is very realistic right now.”

Honestly, the idea appealed to him. He needed the money. He didn’t necessarily want the record deal, but with a three-year contract, one that he controlled rather than one that controlled him, he could get his feet under him financially and continue to make different plans for the future. A contract in hand would mean that he was employed, and he could go to Harmony his own man.

Marcus continued, “And, knowing the legal issues that have been brought against you by Cain Proctor, Ms. Byrd has agreed to represent you on behalf of Gannon Records.” Marcus pointed in Paulette’s direction. She paused in her writing and met Steve’s eyes, nodding in agreement. “You should know that they call Ms. Byrd the genie because she will magically make your legal issues with Mr. Proctor disappear overnight. Believe it.”

He felt another burden lift from his shoulders. Intellectually, he knew that Cain had no standing in his lawsuit against him. Financially, though, he didn’t know if he had the power to fight it. With Gannon behind him, it would go away.

Please God, help me make the right decision here, Steve prayed has he pulled the contract across the lacquered table toward him. As soon as he finished the inner prayer, his phone buzzed. Two people had that number—Chaz and his realtor. Either one would take precedence over this meeting.
